Sky V's Netflix

Since having our son 16 months ago getting out isn’t as easy as before. Don’t get me wrong I am not complaining, I am much happier sitting at home in front of a roaring fire with a glass of wine watching good TV in the company of family and good friends. The idea of going to a busy nite club just isn’t something that I enjoy anymore. Getting pushed and shoved, having drinks spilled on your clothes, spending ages trying to get a taxi home and of course the late nights with possibility of a hangover the following morning, has somehow lost all of its appeal for me. Oh how our priorities change (I’m beginning to sound like my mother now!).

I love to curl up and watch a good film, documentary or TV programme. Since moving into our house, almost 3.5 years ago, we have had Sky TV and 2 years ago we decided that we would try Netflix also. We had huge choice and could both watch separate programmes, if we wished. We decided to go with the most basic Sky package with the documentary channels. This package originally cost us €32 per month, which wasn’t bad considering we didn’t go out much at all. Slowly but surely the cost has risen and only last week I received notification that the package would again rise by €1, just before Christmas, bringing the it to €39. €1 is not much but it has made us question as to whether we should keep Sky or just rely solely on Netflix. Netflix costs us €8 per month, which in contrast is much more affordable each month.

I decided to do a comparison of Sky V’s Netflix in order to help in making our decision as to whether to get rid of Sky altogether. I have based the decision on our current Sky package. Here is what I have come up with:

SKY
NETFLIX
Winner
Cost Per Month
€39
€8
Netflix
Movies
True Movie Channels
Variety
Netflix
Documentaries
Yes
Limited
Sky

€1 in 2 years
Netflix
Variety of Programmes
Limited due to package
Unlimited - access to everything
Netflix
Repetition of Programming

Never as viewing is by choice and not scheduling
Netflix

So I think after looking at the above comparison there are clearly a lot of similarities between both options but what stands out is the cost and the regular price increases by Sky. This may not seem as much but it really has pushed us into making a decision, that we have talked about for a long time, and it’s clear that Netflix is our winner and so it means saying goodbye to Sky. I do realise that our viewing options are somewhat limited with Netflix but we also have Saorview so will have access to a number of other free to air channels. We also have a DVD player and wifi, which will allow us to watch any TV programmes on the playback option, so I think Netflix along with these options are our answer.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has given up Sky in favour of Netflix. What are your thoughts on it? How have you found it? Do you miss certain programmes on Sky? Would you consider going back to Sky or another similar option? Please let me know your experience.
